The Humanifesto is the Dreamfish code of conduct. It serves to build shared values and understanding of how we work together to create the lives we want to live.
1. Create livelihoods that meet both our individual and our collective needs.
- Improve health in our families
- Increase learning and education in our families and communities
- Reduce conflict in our communities
- Increase democracy and civic engagement in our communities
- Have enough physical assets and income to meet our living needs
- Care for the environment with lowering consumption, reusing, recycling, and sharing.
2. Engage diversity as a source of strength.
Humans are different. We all bring value. Working with people different than ourselves, we build our adaptability, learning, empathy, and innovation. We believe accessibility for people with disabilities is a priority, not an afterthought. As we share the air, our own breath reminds us that the self is common to both humanity and to the earth. You may speak Swahili, Urdu, Spanish, English or Chinese. You may identify as a woman or a man, some blend of both, or neither. You may wear a baby sling, hijab, a kippah, a suit, leather, piercings, a pentacle, a political badge, a rainbow, a rosary, tattoos, or something we can only dream of. We welcome you.
3. Learn in relationship.
We mutually support our growth and development. We share our learnings with each other. We give each other feedback.
4. Manage ourselves.
We keep our agreements and adapt as we learn and our situation changes. We make doable plans. If we need to leave a project or change our agreement, we do so in a way that doesn’t harm the project and team. For example, we communicate changes and help to find replacement for the role we served.
5. Reflect to build self-awareness.
We consider others feedback on our behavior and how our choices make an impact. Reflecting on our thoughts, feelings and senses, we build our self-awareness. Self-awareness enables us to make more effective choices that supports our livelihood goals, our families, communities, clients, coworkers, and the earth. As a person, we develop socially, ethically and professionally.
6. Practice effective communication.
We are honest, open and transparent in communication. By giving each other feedback, we can become more aware and more effective at work. Our perspectives are often different from each other. We check our own assumptions directly with each other. We strive to own our own interpretations and feelings about a situation. If need be, we ask for help to facilitate.
7. Embrace creativity.
Humans are creative. Nurturing creativity is essential for our health. We will never put a limit on creativity just because it makes someone uncomfortable. We support freedom of creative expression.
Dreamfish is possible, because of the participation of thousands of individuals, and a small number of dedicated dreamfishers and organizations that partnered with us. Many thanks to every person who has dreamfished over the last couple years to arrive at where we are now as a work cooperative. We pay special respect to Dreamfish contributors who have given significantly from 2006-2011 to the mission. As a practice of diversity, this text is a remix, with much thanks to Dreamwidth for allowing us to repurpose text in their Diversity Statement.
