Dreamfish members are both co-owners and customers of Dreamfish. Many of us contribute our energy, skills and funds to operate these four programs:

• Dreamfish Community Tech - Our core program is our online work community. Below, we'll get into what we're working on.
• Dreamfish Fellows program - A 12 month service learning experience for senior consultants to coach entrepreneurs in professional skills while gaining experience in global citizenship and intercultural collaboration
• Dreamfish Internship program - An empowering 6 month program for youth from settlements in developing regions of the world, youth gain practical experience in global leadership and professional skills.
• Dreamfish Residency in Kenya - 12 week residencies at Dreamfish Place Nairobi for professionals leading capacity-building projects while mentoring youth in our internship program.  Dreamfish Place Nairobi also serves a landing pad for Dreamfish contributors while generating income as a collaboration retreat venue.

Why do this project now?

Now is the time because great people have stepped up and more open source software is available to support the project. In addition, we create impact by using this project as a training ground for African young professionals. Here are the needs that we're addressing:

1. Do more of what we do well
Our strength is helping people to develop through practice in relationship. A few examples of Dreamfish at work - facilitating a One Laptop Per Child Kenya Summit; a web developer in Ohio collaborating with a startup entrepreneur in Ghana; an LGBT activist working with an artist on digital storytelling, a leadership consultant in Taiwan facilitating strategic planning for a grassroots nonprofit benefiting homeless children in Kenya, a transgender youth creating their life with professional skills and income, an executive coach in US to support a young woman CEO to build a tool empowering rural farmers in Africa.  Given the small resources invested in Dreamfish, these are great results AND with better tools for connection, we can do much more. Imagine millions of people having the same opportunities.

2. Mobilizing our diversity
Diversity is both our strength and our challenge. How do we hold space for engaging the richness of our diversity for our members' benefit? How do we enable individuals to customize their participation for their unique goals and interests?
To give you an idea of our diversity in action, my estimate is that about 40% of our community are youth and live on less than $4 a day, 20% live on more than $100 a day, about 40% are over 40 yr. We are of many faiths, and cultural norms. Our new technology will allow people to follow the topics that are most of interest and filter out what they don't need.

3. Shifting from "give me work" to "we are doing it!"
With the new technology design, our goal is to shift from passive transactions to pro-active relationship-building as the foundation for work in Dreamfish. Behind this is a larger agenda of societal change to help people shift from institutionally-learned apathy to empowerment. it is critical that we support individuals to pro-actively create support systems for their own development, rather than wait or resign. The way our tech is setup now, people in Dreamfish network tend to wait for something to happen rather than initiate interaction. The tech is getting in the way - it is hard for anyone to know how to start, how to interact and how to achieve goals. This is changing. We are designing our new tech to facilitate people connecting around "What are you working on?" as the starting point for interaction.

Currently, it is not easy to connect with Dreamfish members in a rural village or without a computer. In our new tech plan, you will be able to select whether you use your phone, sms, or sit at your computer to interact with Dreamfish people. You will also be able to more easily initiate local face-to-face events.

4. Easier Knowledge sharing
Finding information that you want and sharing has been hard in our current platform. We are making the act of sharing to be front and center. We also are making a friendly section to explain what Dreamfish is and how to get started.

What are we working on?

Our team includes Grant Bowman and me as project co-leads, 2011 Dreamfish Interns and Mentors. The project has three sub-teams - Community Leadership, Back-end Development, and Front-end Design.  We welcome volunteers to get involved. Here's what we are working on...

Community Leadership is working on the Community HelpDesk, community digital art and performance, social media communication, improving online documentation, online admin, and the campaign to fund the project. Team members work alongside me and include Grace Kwamboka, Nelson Munyiri and Simon Muya.

Backend Development is working on developing software functionality, server administration, wifi network and maintaining hardware for the project. The team has now got a server up, prepared hardware for development, installed and configured software for prototyping. Team members work alongside Grant and include Harison Wamani and Peter Masuman.

Front-end Design and Development is working on user experience/ interaction design, product management, graphic design, CSS and HTML. We have been interviewing Dreamfish members on how Dreamfish tech can help them, researching the problems with current tools, prototyping solutions and testing different open source social software. Team members work with me and include Maryann Wangari and Cynthia Kihu.

Our mentors include Bernard Owuor, Jamila Abass for development, Bridget Mcgraw for design, Jonas Kolben for networking and Polly Bodegener for communication. Thanks to Nancy White and Peter Kaminski, Dreamfish Advisors, for helping on strategy.

Everyone that works in technology has been guilty of this at one time or another.

There are so many things to learn it is impossible to learn it all and become an expert in everything. We just need to get something done quickly. We take the gamble that what we need is part of the right side of the 80/20 rule. All we really need is a temporary structure, not a great pyramid. Items that come to mind include log files, backups, RAM memory, disk space, bandwidth, hardware errors and log files. Gambling on the Pareto Principle feels so alluring.

We ignore them until we can no longer ignore them. We make do and continue to fix things quickly without going back to implement what we know we should do to make it work right. We build ever upward on a foundation of sand. As we build upward the sand shifts even more making things seem not quite right. We haven't invested the time to understand things fully and know what is going on. We haven't explored before a problem to understand how to fix a problem when it occurs.

We do this again and again until we learn. We look back and find that all the time, money, resources and hassle spent patching things up costs far more than having just done it right in the first place. What have your experiences told you?

In a few short days I am headed to Nairobi, Kenya for three months to work with Dreamfish and recent graduates of Nairobits. While in Nairobi I look forward to to meeting with the Ubuntu Kenyan Team and other open source related groups such as iHub, mFarm and Ushahidi. Yet perhaps you can relate to this experience - in work, I have often felt alone, forgetting the love and support around. We are networks, after all. If I only reached out to reconnect and ask for help. To be of mutual support to each other, please join in spreading the new Dreamfish message, "Connected, we grow".

At Dreamfish Place Nairobi, we like to have our meals seated on the garage floor on coastal Swahili style bamboo mats or mkekas. We actually don’t even need the mkekas as we do enjoy having our outdoor meetings seated on the green grass. Although there is this one really great bench that everyone loves to sit on.

It was made from reclaimed wood by Elisha, a Dreamfisher who donated it to Dreamfish. While these seating arrangements have served us well so far, we are now looking into getting some raised seats.

After a night of brainstorming, Imraan, Steve and Tiff finally figured out how to design and construct the new Dreamfish seats and tables from tires, plywood and cushions. 

A neighbour donated tires. Tools were found and construction began.  It was challenging to cut the tires because of the metal wiring inside. A number of saw blades were broken in the process, but the boys soldiered on under the hot sun, determined to do it all without having to outsource the work.

This was in keeping with the Jua Kali spirit that Kenya is famous for. The term 'Jua kali' is an expression for the East African informal sector. It is derived from the Swahili term 'jua kali' which means ‘hot sun' and refers to the typical circumstances under which entrepreneurs work outdoors, and in particular to street vendors and artisans.

I have to point out here however that as the men were toiling away, I did suggest several times that they get a sharp panga or machete and simply hack at the metal wires to cut them. Many a woman will bear me witness on the events that followed, as my suggestion was merely brushed aside by the men and I accused them of dismissing me simply because I was a woman.

One of the men even deigned to compare me to the typical nay-sayers you will find gathered around 2-3 laboring men sweating over a task under the hot African sun. He further expounded by equating me to these know-it-alls who take shelter under the shade ready to criticize every effort of the laboring men, constantly shaking their heads with an expression on their faces that says “that could never work”. But finally after hours of toiling - at snail’s pace I must add - they decided to try out my idea - and it worked! And true to my nature for the rest of the afternoon I took pleasure in rubbing their noses in it with “I told you so!” (But this could have been an opportunity for us to talk about gender dynamics).

We are now in need of funds to buy materials for the seats we will be using around Dreamfish Place and in the Samburu Guest house whose great looking curtains have just been put up.

We hope to have them ready in time for a team stay organized by Sabine Sibler, a resident guest at Dreamfish Place, here to coordinate the water reform project in Kenya.

Team stays are great for Dreamfish due to their social impact: for every $1,000 USD spent at Dreamfish Place on a week-long team stay, fifty people’s lives will be immediately impacted. Proceeds support onsite staff and interns from low-income communities, as well as residencies by artists and technologists, who all contribute to the Dreamfish cooperative. 20% percent of proceeds for the Samburu house rental will go to a Samburu women eco-entrepreneurship project, enabling the women to empower themselves and raise the quality of life for their children.

In recent days, we have completed our first blackboard. We plan to have several blackboards to move around Dreamfish Place for use in planning and implementing various projects. Fred likes to cut things so he was just the man for the job.

He cut up the plywood for the blackboard that will be fitted on the garage door, and the boys all lent a hand in the cutting and painting.

The blackboards will be ideal for people coming to Dreamfish Place, as they will allow for easier collaboration amongst Dreamfishers. So far all of the Dreamfish furniture material and tools have been donated or cost little to buy and labor has been volunteered. The furniture has been designed by Dreamfishers in a fun environment, with lots of camaraderie. We look forward to getting more funds to be able to construct and then enjoy sitting on the fruits of our labor, worked on under the jua kali – true to Dreamfish’s style.

In conversation with Tiffany over coffee, we spoke about creating a SF meeting for Dreamfishers that reside locally. I've spoken to Carnelian by the Bay folks - ant they seem to be open to having a Dreamfish meetup there on a Tuesday or so. Once I understand how many ppl are interested in the meetup - I can then proceed to book the venue. It will be no-host bar.

Touch deprivation has increased in our work world. Many more people are isolated from unemployment. We work online and touch our keyboards much more often than the skin of another person. We travel less to lower our environmental footprint.

How can we bring ourselves into more contact with each other in this global work environment? Many people I work with in Dreamfish I have never met in person. We have not shaken hands, given each other a pat on the back, smacked a high-five in the air or given a hug in tough moment. How do we get in more contact?

First, let's connect. Let's get our body folk in touch with each other. Several Dreamfishers are practitioners and researchers, are supporting workers and organizations to engage the wisdom of the body for organizational wellness. They include Paul Loper, Lisa Bradley, Pien van den Herik, Janet Willie, Dietmar Brinkmann, Rita Venturini, and myself. A new Dreamfish Group is soon forming for somatics and work.

Being in person is a high-touch opportunity.

As an example, recently, at our booth at OSCON, I hugged a lot of people that came by. One was Alolita Sharma, from Open Source Initiative and Wikimedia Foundation. Alolita and I found a way to extend our hug. Alolita and I are mutual friends of Nnenna Nwakanma, a fellow Dreamfisher. By our hugging and holding a sign up to give love 2 Nnenna, we created a virtual way of putting our arms around Nnenna. It is not a hug, to be sure, but it creates an empathic experience of touch.
