Imagine a world where people act as mature human beings, creating anew the world with new choices, innovating new work and enterprises that support a sustainable economy and environment. Entrepreneurs are indeed more involved in community development, than are non-entrepreneurs.
What kind of education is needed to develop a world of entrepreneurs? There is a lot ot learn, but we do not need to go it alone. Entrepreneurs benefit from education in personal organization, interpersonal skills, creative thinking, time management, leadership, self-efficacy (knowing that one can accomplish). To succeed, creating a resource support system of people around oneself is vital. “Learning to learn” while doing something one hasn’t done before is also critical skill for the ongoing resilience of a venture.
However, the kind of 20th century education developed to shape societies full of factory workers and colonialized citizens, will not develop these skills necessary for 21st century agents that change the world. Programs that educate youth to be digital factory workers and dutiful consumers will not support the human development that we urgently need to transform our global society. Institutional patterns shapes people to be passive, rule-bound, transactional, disconnected from the surrounding context. How many adults do you know that measure self-worth with resumes, titles, sizes of houses and amount of salary? Given that institutions teach children to measure the value of self by exam marks and diplomas, it is no wonder that paychecks can be equated with value more often than the food, clean water and dignity sought through work.
